Kitchen Renovation - Section 1 Budget

I've gotten a couple of questions on the budget for what we've done so far here, I've got some of the numbers scattered in different posts, but here they are in one place for this section. If you happen to have any other questions, don't hesitate to let me know.

  1. Café Shelves - built from mostly reclaimed materials: $50
  2. Paint for wall: $20*
  3. Moving outlets from the floor, to above the counter, my fabulous husband did those, we just bought supplies: $10
  4. 3 base cabinets: $100 on Craigslist
  5. Wood for trash/recycling bin, plus hinges (some of the wood was reclaimed): $30
  6. Laminate counter top from Ikea: $69
  7. Primer, paint and paint sprayer for cabinets: $120*
* - These costs are part of the whole kitchen, so I don't really consider them part of section 1, budget is shown below both ways.

Total Cost if this was all we were doing: $389
Total Cost for this section taking into account future use of materials: $249

Either way you look at, I think we got a bargain.

Master Bedroom Plantshelf

The Nester is having another Price My Space Party and I can't resist.

Sadly, so little in our house is "done"... we've lived here 4 years and with the exception of the kids rooms, I wouldn't say anything is more than 80% done. (Our Barnyard Nursery and the Bug's room are online.)

And one of the worst rooms in our house, is the master bedroom, I know, I know... it should be a priority, and it was when we moved in. We bought all new furniture, but, I fear we've bought the wrong furniture. That is another post entirely for another day...

What we're here to do is Price My Space.

So while my master bedroom may be a failure right now, it is home to one of my favorite little nooks in the house. Our Plant shelf:

When we moved it I instantly had a vision for how it would look. Bug given that it was a rather useless space (above the double doors leading to the hallway), I didn't want to spend a lot. Here is the break down of how we did it.

  1. Throw blanket, originally $39.99 at Linens and Things, bought on clearance for $19
  2. Ironwork. TJ Maxx, "compare price" was $29.99 each. Their price $19.99, on clearance for $12 each.
  3. Trunk... oh this trunk. How I lusted for this trunk, it was $89 at Target. No way could I justify it. Then I found one that was badly damaged, it looked like it had been crushed. They had it on clearance for $50. I brought it to the manager and they took one look at it and gave it to me for $30. All it took was some pushing, pulling and carefully placed "L" brackets and it looks great. The lid doesn't actually close, but I don't need it to.
  4. 3 Black Candle Sticks and white candles. I found set exactly like them at Pier 1 for about $60 if memory serves me correctly. I paid $30 for this set at TJ Maxx
  5. Topiary. Originally $49.99 at Micheals. Used a 40% off coupon to get it for $29.
  6. Cute little bird house. Originally $19 at JoAnn's. Used a 40% off coupon and got if for $11.
  7. Carved Woodwork. Found at TJ Maxx, their "compare price" was $49, they were selling it for $29 and it was in the clearance section for $14!!!
  8. Letter "B" - The only thing I paid "full price for". At TJ Maxx for $9, their "compare price" was $15.
So... This entire space would have cost: $381.96
I spent $137!!!

And I had a wonderful time putting it together... at least one area in my master bedroom works, lucky it is right across from my bed so I get to look at it often.

The Bug's Room AKA, the Decorating Cents Room

My daughter has one of my favorite rooms in our house, not that she sleeps in it - she's bunking with her brother for a while but I digress.

We completed this room for under $500, hence "The Decorating Cents Room."

Here is the "before" as in before we moved in... How the old owners had it.

And here is what we did for the first few months we lived here, just to warm it up with what she had from our town house we transitioned her to the big girl room she has now.

So here is the after:

Seen above:
Dresser from Ikea, originally a honey pine piece that was slightly damaged, got it for $199. We sanded, primed and painted it white. (it came in white, but in a laquer finish that I HATED)

Valances $8 - made myself from some Rasberry Chambray fabric I got at JoAnn's.

Bookcase - $70 from Ikea, we covered the back panel with pink wrapping paper to give it more pop. (The unit came in white.)

Seen above, nothing new. The quilt rack was from our living room and the quilt we had from the town house... cost - $0

Seen above:
I covered the memory board from her shelf that we'd had from the townhouse with the same window treatment fabric and some scrap ribbon - cost : $2 or less.

The items on the memory board... we'll they are memories, including her baptism dress. I love that dress...

Seen above:
Bed: Frame from Craigs list, $50. Originally it was a rough pine like the stuff you see from "this end up" we sanded, primed and painted it white. Mattress was bought new for $75 on clearance.

Side table: Ikea, unfinished table $19... sanded, primed and you guessed it... painted white.

Bedding: Sheets and comforter set bought at homegoods for $40 total, on clearance. Pillows made from pillow forms and scrap fabric. Cost $0.

Also seen throughout the room, the quotes, lady bugs and flowers. I painted those by hand. I pulled the colors and shapes from her quilt.

Plus other random accessories including storage boxes that were under $50.

Total cost: $438, many weekends planning, painting and assembling... and a whole lot of love. Priceless.

Thanks for stopping by!!!
